Finding Resilience In Tough Times
When times feel uncertain or difficult and worry begins to creep in, it's hard not to be drawn into it all. If you're feeling anxious or stressed out, it can be a good focus point to remember there are things we can change and things we can't.
Let be what is, let go what doesn't serve you
A key mindset shift to help us be more resilient during tough times is to try and not dwell on the stuff we can't control. This will typically include:
- Other people's actions
- What will happen in the future on a wider scale
- How long the current situation will go on for
Don't feel like you need to completely forget these things. It's okay not to be okay - they are there and there's not doubt these things are stressful. But what we can do is acknowledge them, then move on.
TRY IT:
If you like to meditate, it can help to think about these thoughts like clouds drifting through the sky. Observe each thought/cloud as it pops into your mind, but the clouds continue to shift on with the breeze so as this happens you can move onto the next one, letting the previous one go.
What should we focus on?
When everything around us doesn't feel right, it can help to focus on the things we do have the power to control. Things such as:
- Your attitude and mindset
- Aiming to get 7-8 hours of sleep at night
- Keeping your immune system bolstered by eating nourishing food including a wide variety of vegetables and fruits
- Getting active for 30 minutes a day and honouring the energy that you've got to give to keep your body strong
- Meal prepping and keeping your food stock levels maintained
- Finding/researching/putting into action positive, proactive ways to keep busy and happy when we have the chance
This list may seem pretty trivial compared to what's going on in your life that is causing the stress and difficulties, but maintaining any sense of control - even if it's just through small tasks you set yourself - will help give you a sense of grounding.
